The Steel Chiminea

This steel chiminea is easily maintained and is coated with linseed oil-based coatings. It is both designed and intended to "discolor, known as developing a "Patina", as I discuss below. Each piece is hand-cut and each Chiminea is hand-assembled and welded to ensure a square footprint.

The linseed oil coating is a safe and naturally derived coating that will protect raw steel from the damaging effects of moisture. All steel is subject to rust, which causes deterioration of any steel item. The coating that I use slows this process down significantly. When you first use the chiminea, you will see a "smoke" rise from the sides, where the surface layer of this coating "burns off, and applying a coat once the chiminea cools is imperative to maintain its integrity. I will provide you with enough supplies and information to safely coat the chiminea yourself. Think of this as the same process as when you first use a cast iron frying pan you need to do what is known as "seasoning" the steel.

Much like that pan, the proper seasoning will assist the chiminea in not becoming subject to the ravages of water over time, and cause an ever-changing patina. Your job will be to enjoy the chiminea and to continue to apply material periodically to help it continue to prevent the undesirable effects of water.

Maintenance:

You will need to periodically re-apply the material to the surface of the chiminea, depending upon its use and the effects of the elements. Sun, almost as much as rain will change the surface of your chiminea. Sun and low humidity will dry the surface out, robbing it of the protective layer of oil. While the damaging effects will honestly be minimal, if you desire to retain the original look of the chiminea you will need to undertake some minor maintenance by cleaning and re-applying oil to the surface.

Clean the chiminea with warm water or a plain, dry towel as is necessary. Do not use soap! If you use water, allow the chiminea to dry thoroughly. Once dry, use a clean, dry rag and apply a very thin layer of food-safe linseed oil, which you can find at most grocery stores. Apply it to all surfaces on the exterior of the chiminea, and buff to remove any excess oil which could produce a "sticky” surface.

Should rust develop, simply buff the rusted area with steel wool or a scrubbing pad, then wipe the residue with a clean, dry towel? Re-Apply oil as outlined above. Buffing with steel wool or a scrubbing pad will restore an "as new” and unseasoned finish.

Doing nothing will also allow the exterior to develop that ever-changing patina that has become so desirable. The steel exterior is thick enough to last well beyond any normal use and rusting through (like the fender of your car) is not a worry under normal use and conditions without re-coating the surface.

A stylish and functional way to stay warm and grill with a Rickey Tanno Design Steel Chiminea

My steel chiminea is made from solid 3/16" steel plating, which is stitch welded to prevent distortion and adds to the strength and longevity of this piece of art. It is designed to keep the bottom off of the ground, which helps prevent premature deterioration caused by having steel in contact with the ground which allows moisture to build. Shaped like a pyramid and weighing in at well over 300 pounds, it will never tip over on its own when properly placed.

This piece of art is absolutely functional, burning just about any combustible material (wood, charcoal briquettes, lump coal). I have designed this with total use in mind, be it the sturdy rails on which the included grill rests or the wide fire pit, allowing you to enjoy and glow of burning coals.

Dimensions - 36w x 32d x 72h- Weight is approximately 335 pounds Delivered fully constructed and placed - this is NOT a portable item!
